NSSGA Announces Environmental Awards

The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association has awarded five U.S. aggregates producers with the organization's 2004 Environmental Eagle Gold Award.

The NSSGA reports that it created the Environmental Eagle awards program in 1992 to provide national recognition for aggregate producers that meet and exceed technical environmental and regulatory requirements. Awards are presented in three categories: small, which is defined as aggregates operations that produce less than 500,000 tons a year; medium, which include operations producing between 500,000 and 1.5 million tons annually; and large, those operations that produce more than 1.5 million tons a year. There were 48 entries in the 2004 award program.


• Large Operation, Gold Award: Hanson Building Materials America, Downingtown Quarry, Downingtown Pennsylvania; Lafarge North America, Presque Isle Quarry, Presque Isle, Michigan; Vulcan Materials co., Cabarrus Quarry, Concord, North Carolina; and Graham Quarry, Lorton, Virginia.
• Medium Operation, Gold Award: Vulcan Materials Co., Dousman Quarry, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
• Large Operation, Silver Award: Granite Construction Co., Bradshaw Facility; Hanson Building Materials America, Hanson Permanente Cement and Jamesville Quarry; and Lafarge North America, Manitoulin Quarry.
• Medium Operation, Silver Award: Aggregate Industries, Wrentham Quarry; Hanson Building Materials America, Versailles Quarry; Hedrick Industries, Lake Norman Quarry; Lafarge North America, Shalersville Plant; Staker & Parson Companies, Brigham City Facility and South Weber Facility; and Vulcan Materials Co., Plainfield Quarry.
• Small Operation, Silver Award: Vulcan Materials Co., Casey Quarry.

There were four Bronze Award winners in the small category, twelve Bronze Award winners in the medium category, and six in the large category. The NSSGA has also recognized Vulcan Materials Co.'s Avery Sales Yard and Tampa Sales Yard with Environmental Eagle Awards in a special category for distribution yards, which do not produce aggregates.
